So, let’s set the record straight. Friday the 13th is not unlucky. As a matter of fact, it used to be a day of pleasure, love, fertility and fun. It was a blessed day. It was the day when people celebrated the Goddess of Life — and it can be again.
Why would a day of joy be turned into a day of fear? The real reason behind our fear of Friday the 13th lies in our society’s fear and rejection of the Divine Feminine Spirit, the part of us that knows how to deeply love, enjoy and connect. And women everywhere are still paying the price of men’s fears.
The number 13 is associated with the ancient Goddess of the Moon. There are actually 13 lunar months that make for a more natural calendar; it is a solar-lunar calendar because 365 days is the measure of the Earth going around the Sun (solar) and 28 days is the average measure of the Moon’s cycles (lunar).
There’s an extra day in there that ancient people thought of as a day of time, a day that birthed a new creation. But most patriarchal cultures reject our connection to the Earth’s cycles and to the ancient Goddess, and so they did away with the lunar calendar.
Superstition says that you can’t have 13 people for dinner because that will result in the death of someone there — such as Jesus and the 12 disciples. This shows a solar mindset that values 12, a number that implies completion.
Another example is the original story of Sleeping Beauty where the king only has 12 golden place settings (his reliance on masculine solar consciousness) and so doesn’t invite the 13th fairy, thereby incurring her wrath. The 13th rejected fairy is none other than the ancient Goddess herself, who ruled the Moon and the lunar tides. The new movie Maleficent contains elements of this more ancient tale.
The number 13 symbolizes femininity, magic, psychic awareness, emotional intelligence and spiritual wholeness. In Egypt, there were 13 steps on the ladder that leads to eternity; on the thirteenth step, the soul comes home to itself. Thirteen also symbolizes our ability to bring this spiritual awareness into our lives, just as it is Feminine Spirit that births the soul here on Earth.
The number 13 is comprised of 1+3. One symbolizes the source, the beginning, a new birth. Three symbolizes the creative process itself, the energy that brings the new birth to completion. Just as in fairy tales where there are usually three gifts, three tests, three balls, three is the number that represents how we work out a problem and solve it in time. Together, 1+3=4; four represents grounding in this process through the union of opposites.
Thirteen is a prime number and in that regard has a purity and integrity to it. And finally, the thirteenth card in the Tarot deck is the Death card, which is symbolic of transition, change and evolution.
The number 13 is indeed a magical energy that flows from the feminine imagination. Unfortunately, our rational mind is too often afraid of that imagination and so, refuses to understand the deeper meaning of life.
Friday itself is the day of the Goddess — named after the Norse goddess Frigga. Friday is also associated with Aphrodite, Venus and Hathor, Goddesses of Love. Since all of the monotheistic religions have rejected the Divine Feminine, it makes sense that they would instill in people a fear of Her day, since love and joy can make us break those patriarchal rules very quickly!
